Wow. A great way to immerse yourself in the roots of search and rescue. A lot of the information is outdated, of course, but it's still a great book to read if you are interested in search management or rope safety and handling. Sometimes the writing is a bit difficult to understand (some sentences could mean a few different things depending upon which word one emphasizes:), but still worth the read. I would, however, suggest that it not be the first read about the subject. The size can seem a bit overwhelming. Glad I got it and read it!Product details

Agreed that some of the information is a bit outdated, however, having said that, it's nothing terribly major. PACKED full of alot of information. This book covers a wide array of Search and Rescue issues which are related through stories and re-told accounts of various rescue situations encountered by the author and others. Overall, a great reference book worth reading. Not something you're going to keep in your pack and haul around the hills though.
This is one thick and massive book on SAR. It is very thick and heavy, best have it quite well read BEFORE going into the wilderness.
I like the first chapter that gives a quick history of SAR, always interesting in how those things came about. It will be interesting to see what it is like 100 years from now as technology improves.
This book gives every type of rescuing from the forest, cave, snow, whitewater, you name it.
Basically if someone goes into the wilderness and does something stupid this book tells you how to get them out. Dead or alive. Great for that kid who wants to be an Eagle Scout.
I bought this for my father because he is heavily involved in the search and rescue field in the United States and in China. He also has a nice office library set up and has been expanding his collection. Great book, great addition!
